Datascape: a social geographic storytelling platform

Datascape enables artists, researchers, community groups and others to narrate their communities and physical spaces through interactive virtual worlds that are laid on top of the physical world. We are developing software and devices to create and explore these narrratives through a vehicle-based virtual periscope, a gallery-based installation, and mobile phone and web applications. http://datascape.info/
We would like interested parties to work with us to test and explore the opportunities afforded by this system. Participants will benefit from the program by having a new "vehicle" through which to explore their given line of research or expression. Experiences from this program will help to guide the continued development and direction of Datascape, and it's contribution to related fields of inquiry.
We are primarily interested in ideas whose geographic area of interest is in Los Angeles and Orange counties of California. Proposals should also consider the local and immersive nature of the virtual world experience as contrasted with a typical top-down cartographic mapping approach.
We are casting a broad net in terms of the types of projects, some potential uses of the platform include:
- A platform through which to visualize, explore and/or communicate existing research projects with a geographic component.
- Issue-based interventions into dominant understanding of communities or spaces.
- Interactive aesthetic re-imaginings of existing communities or pathways.
- Interactive sound and music experiences generated by locations, geographic data, or travel trajectories.
- Annotation of geographic space with informational or media overlays.
- Interactive place-based stories.

Please email a *brief* expression of interest outlining the issue, data, story or experience you would like to convey. We're interested in ideas ranging from the concept phase to research that is more fully flushed out. Send to Eric Kabisch <ekabisch AT uci . edu>. We hope to discuss your ideas and begin working with participants as soon as possible, but are also interested in ideas that might have a longer time horizon.
